Wireless security cameras transmit their video signal without a hardwired connection. This doesn’t mean that all wireless security camera models are completely wireless because there are those that would require a hardwired power source, where some are battery powered. These security cameras transmit images or video footage through your WIFI connection which can then be sent directly to your electronic device such as a phone, computer or tablet. Depending on how it is set up, footage can also be stored in the cloud for later access.
There are wireless security cameras that don’t need WIFI connection to transmit video footage, they work using radio signals, but today most security camera models can be connected via the internet.
Wireless security cameras are a great option for people who rent or prefer the flexibility of being able to move their system from one location to another easily. Installation of wireless security cameras requires very little work, most are plug-and-play, unlike a hardwired security camera which requires a licensed electrician to install tangible wiring.
What types of wireless security cameras can you get?
- Power Over Ethernet (PoE) security camera – A PoE doesn’t require WIFI to transmit video footage. PoE security cameras need to be connected to your home internet or your main internet box via an ethernet cable. Which means that this type of security camera is not entirely wireless. Note that even without Internet, PoE security cameras with SD cards can still record on site. PoE security cameras, however, are professional-grade systems capable of protecting large homes and business establishments.
- Analog wireless – This type of wireless security camera transmits audio and video signals using radio frequencies. It’s cost-effective, but susceptible to interference from other household devices, such as microwaves, cordless phones, video game controllers, and routers and not possible for you to send signals back to the camera.
- Digital wireless – These are the wireless security cameras that you see in the market more frequently. They transmit audio and video analog signals encoded as digital packets over high-bandwidth radio frequencies. Digital wireless security cameras usually have a transmission range of 140 meters, transmitting high quality videos and audio and the receiver can transmit commands and functions to the camera.
To go wired or wireless?
Choosing between getting a wired security camera or a wireless one really depends on your requirements, budget and needs. Wireless security cameras are easier to install than the wired alternative, ideal for people who rent their space, live in homes with brick, stone or marble interiors or historical buildings. Wireless security cameras offer many conveniences, from easy installation to functionalities.
